Which Stockings Will Keep Me Warm?

Which Stockings Will Keep Me Warm?

You just found the perfect little black dress for your New Year’s Eve party, but it’s freezing outside! Luckily, VienneMilano thigh highs are the perfect solution for staying both warm and sexy. Here is our quick guide on finding a weather appropriate pair of stockings.

Before we begin, one topic we must understand is: denier. According to Merriam Webster dictionary, denier is:

"a unit of weight by which the fineness of silk, rayon, or nylon yarn is measured, equal to the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of the yarn and often used to describe the thickness of hosiery."

So, the smaller the denier, the lighter and thinner a pair of hosiery will be. On the other hand, the larger the measure of denier, the heavier and thicker a pair of stocking will be.

3 types of denier

In this photo, we show 3 pairs of VienneMilano stockings: ISABELLA Chestnut Brown 15, VANNA Cinnamon 50 and ANDREA Cocoa Brown 75 denier. Notice how Andrea is five times thicker than ISABELLA?

As you would imagine, hosiery with a low denier (below 50) are meant for warm weather, while hosiery with a high denier (above 50) are made to be worn in colder weather. But what exactly does this mean? To help determine which denier is weather appropriate, we've put together a little chart to recommend the right denier for the right temperature. Note: we're using a Fahrenheit scale.

Chart 1: Cool to cold weather hosiery index (from 10 - 50 degrees)

Cool to cold (winter) hosiery index
Chart 2: Warm to hot weather hosiery index (from 60 - 100 degrees)
Warm to hot (summer) hosiery index

As you see in our charts, there are more selections to choose from during the cooler season. For temperatures that are between 10 – 30 degrees Fahrenheit, we recommend wearing hosiery that range from 70 – 180 denier. When the temperature gets above 50 degrees, we recommend wearing 50 denier (or less).

So, what are some stockings that we consider thick or thin? Here are a few selections to choose from:

ISABELLA (15 denier)

Perfect for temperatures between 50 – 100 degrees.

ISABELLA nude thigh highs
CLAUDIA black thigh highs

CLAUDIA (50 denier)

Perfect for temperature between 40 – 60 degrees.

ANDREA (75 denier)

Perfect for temperature between 10 – 40 degrees.

ANDRA brown thigh highs
GIADA art deco thigh highs

GIADA (180 denier)

Perfect for temperature between 10 – 40 degrees.

Now that we have determined which pair of stockings are appropriate for the various types of weather, here are some outfits we would recommend to pair up with ISABELLA, CLAUDIA, ANDREA and GIADA.

Outfit 1

Have the smoothest looking legs among your friends and co-workers when you wear ISABELLA Nude. This classic work ensemble does not suffer in either style or its chicness.
